25 Rules for Mothers of Sons
Inspired by a Pin I've recently seen about "rules for dads with daughters," I went searching for a similar list for moms with sons. This search was mostly fruitless, so I was inspired to write my own Rules for Moms with Sons. Granted, my list will not be conclusive and may not be entirely uncontroversial. So agree, or disagree, or take with a grain of salt - but I hope to inspire other moms who are loving, and struggling, and tired, and proud, and eager to support the boys in their lives. You are the most important woman in his life, his first teacher, and the one he will look to for permission for the rest of his life. From "Can I go play with them?" to "Should I ask her to marry me?" Its a big job, but as the mumma, we're up for it.

1. Teach him the words for how he feels.
Your son will scream out of frustration and hide out of embarrassment. He'll cry from fear and bite out of excitement. Let his body move by the emotion, but also explain to him what the emotion is and the appropriate response to that emotion for future reference. Point out other people who are feeling the same thing and compare how they are showing that emotion. Talk him through your emotions so that someday when he is grown, he will know the difference between angry and embarrassed; between disappointment and grief.

2. Be a cheerleader for his life
There is no doubt that you are the loudest person in the stands at his t-ball games. There is no doubt that he will tell you to "stop, mom" when you sing along to his garage band's lyrics. There is no doubt that he will get red-faced when you show his prom date his pictures from boy scouts. There is no doubt that he is not telling his prom date about your blog where you've been bragging about his life from his first time on the potty to the citizenship award he won in ninth grade. He will tell you to stop. He will say he's embarrassed. But he will know that there is at least one person that is always rooting for him.

3. Teach him how to do laundry
..and load the dishwasher, and iron a shirt. He may not always choose to do it. He may not ever have to do it. But someday his wife will thank you.

4. Read to him and read with him.
Emilie Buchwald said, "Children become readers on the laps of their parents." Offer your son the opportunity to learn new things, believe in pretend places, and imagine bigger possibilities through books. Let him see you reading...reading the paper, reading novels, reading magazine articles. Help him understand that writing words down is a way to be present forever. Writers are the transcribers of history and memories. They keep a record of how we lived at that time; what we thought was interesting; how we spoke to each other; what was important. And Readers help preserve and pass along those memories.

5. Encourage him to dance.
Dance, rhythm, and music are cultural universals. No matter where you go, no matter who you meet - they have some form of the three. It doesn't have to be good. Just encourage your son that when he feels it, it's perfectly fine to go ahead and bust a move.

6. Make sure he has examples of good men who are powerful because of their brains, their determination, and their integrity.
The examples of men with big muscles and a uniform (like Batman and LaMarr Woodley) will surround your son from birth. But make sure he also knows about men who kick a$s because of their brains (Albert Einstein), and their pen (Mark Twain), and their words (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.), and their determination (Team Hoyt), and their ideas (The Wright Brothers), and their integrity (Officer Frank Shankwitz), and fearlessness (Neil Armstrong), and their ability to keep their mouths closed when everyone else is screaming (Jackie Robinson).

7. Make sure he has examples of women who are beautiful because of their brains, their determination, and their integrity
The examples of traditionally beautiful women (like Daphne Blake, Princess Jasmine, and Britney Spears) will surround your son from birth. But make sure he knows about women who are beautiful from the inside out because of their brains (Madame Marie Curie), and their pen (Harper Lee), and their words (Eleanor Roosevelt), and their determination (Anne Sullivan), and their ideas (Oprah Winfrey), and their integrity (Miep Gies), and fearlessness (Ameila Earhart), and their ability to open their mouths and take a stand when everyone else is silent (Aung San Suu Kyi).

8. Be an example of a beautiful woman with brains, determination, and integrity.
You already are all of those things. If you ever fear that you are somehow incapable of doing anything - remember this: If you have done any of the following: a) grew life b) impossibly and inconceivably got it out of your body c) taken care of a newborn d) made a pain go away with a kiss e) taught someone to read f) taught a toddler to eat with a utensil g) cleaned up diarrhea without gagging h) loved a child enough to be willing to give your life for them (regardless if they are your own) or i) found a way to be strong when that child is suffering...you are a superhero. do not doubt yourself for one second. Seriously.

9. Teach him to have manners

10. Give him something to believe in
Because someday he will be afraid, or nervous, or heartbroken, or lost, or just need you, and you won't be able to be there. Give him something to turn to when it feels like he is alone, so that he knows that he will never be alone; never, never, never.

11. Teach him that there are times when you need to be gentle
like with babies, and flowers, and animals, and other people's feelings.

12. Let him ruin his clothes
Resolve to be cool about dirty and ruined clothes. You'll be fighting a losing battle if you get upset every time he ruins another piece of clothing. Don't waste your energy being angry about something inevitable. Boys tend to learn by destroying, jumping, spilling, falling, and making impossible messes. Dirty, ruined clothes are just par for the course.

13. Learn how to throw a football
or how to use a hockey stick, or read music, or draw panda bears (or in my case alpacas), or the names of different train engines, or learn to speak Elvish, or recognize the difference between Gryffindor and Slytherin, or the lyrics to his favorite song. Be in his life, not as an observer but as an active participant.

14. Go outside with him
turn off the television, unplug the video games, put your cellphone on the charger, even put your camera away. Just go outside and follow him around. Watch his face, explore his world, and let him ask questions. It's like magic.

15. Let him lose
Losing sucks. Everybody isn't always a winner. Even if you want to say, "You're a winner because you tried," don't. He doesn't feel like a winner, he feels sad and crappy and disappointed. And that's a good thing, because sometimes life also sucks, no matter how hard (as moms) we try to make it not suck for our kids. This practice will do him good later when he loses again (and again, and again, and again, and again.....) Instead make sure he understands that - sometimes you win - sometimes you lose. But that doesn't mean you ever give up.

16. Give him opportunities to help others
There is a big difference in giving someone the opportunity to help and forcing someone to help. Giving the opportunity lights a flame in the heart and once the help is done the flame shines brighter and asks for more opportunities. Be an example of helping others in your own actions and the way your family helps each other and helps others together.

17. Remind him that practice makes perfect.
This doesn't just apply to performance-based activities (like sports and music) but also applies to everything in life. You become a better writer by writing. You become a better listener by listening. You become better speaker by speaking. Show your son this when he is just young enough to understand (that means from birth, folks - they are making sense of the world as soon as they arrive), practice trick-or-treating at your own front door before the real thing. Practice how you will walk through airport security before a trip. Practice how you order your own food from the fast food cashier. Practice, practice, practice.

18. Answer him when he asks, "Why?"
Answer him, or search for the answer together. Show him the places to look for the answers (like his dad, or grandparents, or his aunts/uncles, or his books, or valid internet searches). Pose the question to him so he can begin thinking about answers himself. Someday, when he needs to ask questions he's too embarrassed to ask you - he'll know where to go to find the right answers.

19. Always carry band-aids and wipes on you.

20. Let his dad teach him how to do things
...without interrupting about how to do it the 'right way.' If you let his dad show and teach and discover with your son while he is growing up, some day down the road (after a short period of your son believing his dad knows nothing), he will come to the realization that his dad knows everything. You will always be his mother, but in his grown-up man heart and mind, his dad will know the answers. And this will be how, when your son is too busy with life to call and chat with his mom, you will stay connected to what is happening in his life. Because he will call his dad for answers, and his dad will secretly come and ask you.

21. Give him something to release his energy
drums, a pen, a punching bag, wide open space, water, a dog. Give him something to go crazy with - or he will use your stuff. and then you'll sorry.

22. Build him forts
Forts have the ability to make everyday normal stuff into magic. Throw the couch cushions, a couple blankets, and some clothespins and you can transform your living room into the cave of wonders. For the rest of his life, he'll be grateful to know that everyday normal stuff has the potential to be magical.

23. Take him to new places
Because it will make his brain and his heart open up wider, and the ideas and questions and memories will rush in.

24. Kiss him
Any mother of sons will tell you that little boys are so loving and sweet. They can be harsh and wild and destructive during most of the day. But there are these moments when they are so kind and sensitive and tender. So much so that it can cause you to look around at the inward, reserved grown men in your life and think, 'what happens in between that made you lose that?' Let's try to stop the cycle by kissing them when they're loving and kissing them even more when they're wild. Kissing them when they're 2 months and kissing them when they're 16 years old. You're the mom - you can go ahead and kiss him no matter how big he gets - and make sure he knows it. p.s. (this one is just as important for dad's too).

25. Be home base
You are home to him. When he learns to walk, he will wobble a few feet away from you and then come back, then wobble away a little farther and then come back. When he tries something new, he will look for your proud smile. When he learns to read, he will repeat the same book to you twenty times in a row, because you're the only one who will listen that many times. Brownsburg Bounces Back vs. Southport

Offensive movement, team defense, and execution of a game plan resulted in a different team and different result Saturday night as the Bulldogs beat Southport 71-48. Mycah Whetstone knocked down six points and Evan Finley pounded home six as the Dogs jumped out to a strong start while Kenyatta Hardy and Chase Dutra slowed Southport's Div I signees to one field goal each. After a K.J. Walton drive and finish at the buzzer, the Dogs took an 18-5 first quarter lead. Whetstone continued his hot streak in the second quarter connecting for seven of the Dogs' 16 second quarter points. The Dogs went to the locker room with a 34-20 lead. Chase Dutra stepped to the F.T. line in the third going 8-8 and adding a bucket for a 10 point quarter. The Dogs worked to slow Soutport who cut the lead to 12. Bulldog team defense at the end of the third and the beginning of the fourth quarter created more separation as the Dogs finished the game 18-18 from the free-throw line. Mycah Whetstone led all scorers with 19 going 7-10 from the field, grabbing four boards, dishing out two assists, taking two charges and leading the team in deflections. Chase Dutra added 18, going 10-10 from the line, grabbed nine rebounds, and nabbing four steals. Kenyatta Hardy, K.J. Walton, and Trevor Lucas slowed down Ball State Shooter Michael Ramey, while Chase Dutra and Darrian Ringo corralled Kent State Point Guard Kelon Thomas. Evan Finley scored a career high 12 points while playing solid defense. Trevor Lucas dropped in seven points. Kyle Thompson scored six points; Sam Comer drained a three ball; and K.J. Walton drove in a bucket. The Dogs move to 1-1 on the season and begin HCC play this Friday vs. Fishers.

In front of the best student section in the state of Indiana, the Carmel Greyhounds put on a shooting clinic in the field house beating the Dogs 36-65. The hounds knocked down 53% of their 3 pointers, while getting to the line 28 times and connecting on 21. The Bulldogs struggled for offensive flow and only scored 36 points while committing 18 turnovers. Chase Dutra and K.J. Walton both scored 8 points for the dogs while Evan Finley lead the way as the MPP (Most Productive Player) with a score of +16. The Bulldogs will face Southport Saturday, November 26. The Cardinals have two Div I signees. Point guard Kellon Thomas is headed to Kent State, and shooting guard Michael Ramey is Ball State bound.

Summer Basketball Camps Draw Biggest Numbers Ever!

How fortunate we are that so many young men want to work hard and develop their skills to become better basketball players! This year's camps brought in the largest number of participants we have ever seen at Brownsburg. The total number of players, from grades Kindergarten through 8th grade, was 261 spanning over 5 days! With the 45 high school helpers, volunteer coaches, and assistant coaches that made for a coach to camper ratio of 1:6!

In addition to the daily drills and games they participated in during the camp day, each camper received a t-shirt, a basketball, a highlight DVD, and a summer workout program to continue building on what they learned at camp.

Thank you to Mike Trammel and Big O Tires for sponsoring our camps! Thank you to the former and current high school basketball players who came out and coached your children, some even after attending football workouts in the morning, and the volunteer and assistant coaches from the Brownsburg Basketball Program who dedicated their time as well. Thank you to Gordon Hayward for giving an inspiring speech and signing autographs for both our younger elementary and upper elementary campers. And finally, thank you to all of the parents who brought your young men to camps and the campers who worked so hard over the span of those 5 days! Keep giving your best and working on your skills daily, as you work to become future Bulldog Basketball Players!

Boys' Basketball Camps Are Here! Gordon will be there! Will You?

Coach Kendrick is proud to present the camps for the summer. Due to popular demand, we attempted to host a three day long camp for elementary kids for three hours (K, 1, 2) or six hours with a lunch (grades 3, 4, 5, 6). Our hope is we can do this in the future and not only teach fundamentals, have contests, but also divide up the campers and play a league during the camp day. Because of the snow storm and the change of the dates we have had to consolidate the camps; regardless, we are excited to bring you a terrific service!

ABOUT DENA EVANS
Although she is only 5’4″ tall, Dena Evans was named “Miss High School Basketball” in Texas as a high school senior and then became a star at the University of Virginia, where she led her teams to three NCAA Final Four appearances and a 118-17 record during her four-year career.

As a senior at UVA, Dena was named the Best Point Guard in the nation and received the Frances P. Naismith award as the country’s top collegiate player under 5’7′. In 2002, Dena was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference’s (ACC) 50th Anniversary All-Time Women’s Basketball Team.

Dena’s pursuit of excellence was never confined to the basketball court. The Boys’ Basketball team faces new foes after IHSAA realigned sectionals on March 30th. Manual and Indianapolis Tech have been moved out and were replaced by Perry Meridian and Southport; in addition the sectional number is now 11.

Sectional 11 includes: Brownsburg, Avon, Ben Davis, Decatur Central, Perry Meridian, Pike, and Southport.

Dogs Defeat Mavs 54-44

The boys’ basketball team defeated the McCutcheon Mavericks on Friday night 54-44. For the third straight win in a row the Bulldogs played solid team defense holding the Mavericks to just 30% shooting; on the other hand, the Dogs were disciplined on the offensive end knocking down 54% of their field goal attempts. In the first quarter the Dogs jumped out to a 12-9 lead. The Maverick defense picked up in the second quarter as they went to a triangle and two, but Taylor Shields knocked down a big three and Kenyatta Hardy drove for a pull up jumper. The two combined for five of the team’s nine points in the quarter and the Dogs took a 21-17 lead into the locker room. McCutcheon’s offense got going in the third quarter as their shooter knocked down two threes, their post players gathered offensive rebounds for put backs, and the Mavs score 19 in the quarter; however, the Bulldogs used a balanced offensive attack with six players scoring a total of 16 points to hold the Mavericks off 37-36. The Bulldog defense stepped up in the fourth quarter holding the Mavs to eight points while calmly knocking down 8-10 from the line to seal the victory 54-44. Jordan Reagan led all rebounders with a career high 10 boards and dished out four assists. Kyle Thompson, Taylor Shields, and Kenyatta Hardy all knocked down a basket. Evan Finley scored four points including 2-2 from the free-throw line. Chase Dutra handed out seven dimes, deflected three passes, grabbed five rebounds, scored eight points, and drove the Maverick defense crazy all night as he drove to the paint and found the open man. Mycah Whetstone scored eleven points and dished out two assists, and Jaraan Lands dropped in 14 and grabbed five rebounds. The Bulldogs want to thank the loyal fans, student body, and Eagle Elementary for coming out and cheering them on. Brownsburg faces Noblesville this Friday here at home!

Saturday afternoon the Brownsburg Boys' Basketball Team helped serve over three hundred meals at two locations for the Wheeler Missions in Indianapolis. This community service event is an eye opening experience for young and old, one in which all who served walked away feeling a stronger since of gratitude and humility. Parents Dana Miller, Mike Miller, and Richard Sutton deserve a special 'thank you' for organizing the event and providing transportation for our players. Bulldogs earn 5th place in County

The Bulldogs beat Cascade 70-47 Saturday morning earning 5th place in the Hendricks County Tournament. The Dogs streaked for 52 points in the second and third quarters vs. the Cadets. Taylor Shields and Zach Miller both dished out an assist. Sam Comer had a duce. Evan Finley connected for four points and commanded the floor with his leadership and play calling. Kenyatta Hardy scored seven points. Darayl Jordan slammed home a dunk, nabbed five steals and totaled eight points. Mycah Whetstone hit all six of his shots in the second half scoring 18 points. Jaraan Lands pounded the boards, grabbing eight offensive rebounds and slashing to the basket for a very efficient double double with 11 rebounds and 21 points on 8-11 shooting. Chase Dutra was mint with his passes, dishing out 10 dimes to go along with 10 points earning him his first career double double. The Dogs are 4-7 on the year and face Manual Saturday night in the Fieldhouse.

Boys Basketball Team Wins over Decatur Central

After feasting with family over Thanksgiving break the boys’ basketball team beat Decatur Central 66-61 on Saturday night earning the Bulldog’s first victory of the season. The Dogs dropped in 15 points in the first quarter but allowed 19. The Bulldogs bench picked up the intensity in the second quarter crashing the boards harder and playing better defense holding Decatur Central to eight points while pouring in 19 taking a 34-27 half time lead. Both teams played the third quarter even. The Dogs held off a Hawks rally in the fourth to seal the victory. Jaraan Lands led the Bulldogs with 15 points and added seven rebounds. Darayl Jordan led the Bulldogs with eight rebounds to go along with his 14 points and four assists. Mycah Whetstone dropped in 14, points, seven rebounds, and a team high four deflections in addition to a timely charge late in the fourth quarter. Chase Dutra tied for game high four assists and added two points. Kenyatta Hardy took a charge and connected for five points. Taylor Shields had four points. Jordan Reagan sacrificed his body for a charge and added four points and two assists. Evan Finley pounded home four points, and Kyle Thompson added four second half points. The Dogs face HCC rival Fishers Friday night at Fishers High School.

Bulldogs 71 - Carmel 84

The Brownsburg Boys’ Basketball Team opened their season at Carmel on Wednesday night dropping the contest 84-71. Darayl Jordan and Mycah Whetstone combined for all of the Bulldog’s thirteen first quarter points. A more balanced attack was delivered on the offensive end in the second quarter, but the Bulldogs’ inability to defend the Greyhounds’ transition and their open threes put them down 26-46. The greyhounds continued to attack the Bulldogs' defense and gained a 34-65 advantage at the end of the third quarter. When things seemed bleakest, the Bulldogs rallied back scoring 37 points in the fourth quarter and drawing within 11 points with 3:50 to go in the game. Darayl Jordan led the Dogs on and off the court. His enthusiasm sparked the Bulldogs’ comeback while his 18 points and 8 rebounds were game highs for the team. Mycah Whetstone knocked down 13 points. Kenyatta Hardy ignited the Dogs off the bench with a very efficient nine points on four shots. Chase Dutra led the team in assists with six and deflections with three to go along with eight points. Taylor Shields had six points; Jaraan Lands added five; Evan Finley scored four; Kyle Thompson knocked down six, and Jordan Reagan had two points in the game.

The boys’ varsity basketball team held their own for the first three quarters against #5 Center Grove and competed well the entire evening. Mycah Whetstone and Chase Dutra both dropped in seven points in the first quarter. The Bulldogs won the second quarter 11-10 behind a balanced scoring attack and tough defense. Darayl Jordan, Dutra, Jordan Reagan, Whetstone, and Kyle Thompson all contributed a basket. Jaraan Lands streaked down the court for five points in the third quarter which saw the Dogs end the 12 minute segment down one. Mycah Whetstone lead the Dogs with 15 points, Chase Dutra added nine, Kyle Thompson connected for 8 points, Lands, Jordan Reagan, and Kenyatta Hardy all added seven points. Gerald Harney and Taylor Shields both dropped in a deuce, while Evan Finley connected on a free-throw. The Bulldogs travel to Carmel Wednesday evening to face the Greyhounds before Thanksgiving!

To Your Future

For you boys who have the talent and want to continue basketball on a competitive basis in high school and perhaps college, the following tips may help.

First of all, there are many things which you must learn that you probably do not associate with basketball which will help you be successful. You must have respect for your parents, teachers, and coaches. You must learn to plan your time wisely—that is, your work time, your study time, your practice time, and your social time.

You should always do your best in your school work. We do not mean that every boy has to be an honor student, because some are not able to do “A” work, but we mean that you; should be alert in the class room, participate in class discussions, and complete your assignments when they are due. We find that students who make an honest and sincere effort usually make at least average grades or better.

Many outstanding basketball players are able to obtain some financial help in college; however, before a boy can qualify he must be in the upper half of his graduating class and in some cases even as high as the upper one third of his class before he is eligible to receive a scholarship. It is discouraging to see fine a basketball player, or any student, who is capable of qualifying for a scholarship but who loafs or does not take classroom work seriously and therefore fails to qualify for a scholarship.

You must keep yourself in good physical condition. There are many distractions today which tend to keep young people up late. The late television shows for instance or a ride around town with the fellows. The athlete must realize he needs eight or nine hours regular hours to sleep so that he can be alert in the classroom and alert on the team.

You must be cooperative and not afraid of work. This starts at home with your willingness to do jobs your parents ask you to do. This carries over to the practice floor also.

You must learn to take care of your personal belongings by keeping your room and clothes neat and your athletic equipment in good condition.

You must strive to be a champion athlete and not a cheap athlete. The champion athlete knows what he must do to become the best and he works towards it. He realizes when he goes into a contest that there is going to be a winner and a loser. He exerts every effort both individually and as a team man to win. He respects his opponent as being a human being and an athlete. In victory he is thankful and enjoys the victory. In defeat, he naturally is not as happy because no one likes to lose. However, he knows that his opponent has done the job better and respects him for it. From the victory, he will work hard to taste the victory again and from defeat he will learn to work harder to achieve success the next time.

The champion athlete respects the work of the officials. He realizes the official’s job is a difficult one and that he will occasionally make a mistake. Human error is part of the game.

The cheap athlete is the one who cheats, is usually loud in calling unpleasant remarks to opponents and officials. This fellow will also blame the officials for his loss, and he never faces reality and is always looking for someone or something to blame his defeat on.

Perhaps you have noticed as your read through this that the things we have suggested to make you a better athlete are also things which will help you be a happy, healthy person. Isn’t this worthwhile? After all, you have only one life to live in which to make yourself as successful citizen. You must see that basketball and life in general have a great deal in common.

In a letter to his wife Jai and his children, Dylan, Logan, and Chloe, he wrote this beautiful "guide to a better life" for his wife and children to follow.

POINTS ON HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR LIFE

Personality:
1. Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
2. Don't have negative thoughts of things you cannot control. Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment.

Points of Clarification:
Point Guard College cost $40.00.

Team Camp the week of June 1-June 5 is for incoming freshman thru seniors. Cost is $15.00. We will play at Frankfort on Saturday, June 5th.

Middle School Camp will be from June 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, & 23. During the second week of this players may also have baseball camp at 11:30. We ask that the players come to an hour of basketball camp, leave at 11:00, and go to baseball camp. Cost will be $15.00.

Shelbyville - The Varsity team will play at Shelbyville on Friday, June 18th @ 6:00 & 7:00 p.m.

Car Pool Departure TBA. Coach Kendrick will decide who travels. Cost is $10.00.

Wabash College - Our Freshman and Junior Varsity teams will play at Wabash College on Saturday, June 19th. We will only take 8 players for each team and the cost is $20.00. Car Pool Departure TBA

D-One - I NEED YOUR $25.00 DEPOSIT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. We will leave in a car pool on the 24th (TBA). Your son will stay in Fort Wayne June 24-27, and we will car pool home on the 27th (TBA). The total cost is $250.00 (all room and board are included) made out to "D-One".

The guy is Josh Powell.
"He has so much talent," Bryant said. "He can help us out so much. It's just that this team has so much depth. Every time he's had an opportunity to step in and perform, he's performed extremely well. Last year when Lamar [Odom] was out for a stretch, he stepped in in Houston and had a huge game, stepped in in San Antonio and had a huge game. He's extremely professional. Doesn't complain. Doesn't whine. He just comes out and works hard every day."

When the two meet up before Bryant takes the court, the Lakers reserve forward doesn't just embrace Bryant, he gets in his ear, imparting a final thought for Bryant to consider before tip-off, as if Powell was basketball's Dr. Phil.
"I tell him," Powell explained, "I say, 'We're going to go out to eat at McDonald's after the game and he's like, 'Yeah!' He gets fired up."
Really, Josh?

"Sometimes I'll be sarcastic. Sometimes I'll say something to really fire him up. Sometimes I'll give a quote from one of the coaches of them being sarcastic, it just all depends. We have fun with it.
"I just try to motivate. I know people wonder, 'How can you motivate guys like Kobe or Pau [Gasol]?' But you know, we're all human."
Now in his second season with the Lakers after spending the first three years of his career with four different teams, Powell has carved out a niche in Los Angeles as a vocal leader even though he is the ninth or 10th man in coach Phil Jackson's regular eight-man rotation.
In his short time with the Lakers, he's become fast friends with Bryant, who can just about count on one hand the amount of teammates he considers personal friends in his 14 seasons in the league.
"We both have a passion to work hard and to practice hard," Bryant said. "I think it started there and it grew from there."
Said Powell: "It's great. I think the biggest thing why we are close is because the hunger and the passion for the game that me and him both have. Granted, the skill level might be different, but you can't -- as far as heart and desire and things like that -- like, I'm up there. And everybody knows that. People can look at that and be like, 'That's my guy.'"

"Josh is a teammate of Kobe and he's a fan of Kobe because he sees how hard Kobe works," said Knox, who is the godfather to one of Powell's daughters. "Josh is a hard worker as well, so he appreciates that."
Bryant isn't just about practice, however. He's about performance. And he knows that Powell is capable of helping the team win ballgames.

"We're not going to say we have the best athletes in the country, but we've got a system and we have to be crisp to execute it," Butler forward Matt Howard said. "We're not going to beat you one-one-one. We play for each other. There's not one guy on this team who is selfish and that's why we win."

"We said this word over and over in Indianapolis, and that word is 'resolve.' These guys have resolve," Butler coach Brad Stevens said. "It's hard to measure, but they've got it."

That's Ali Farokhmanesh, the Northern Iowa guard who hit the game-icing 3-pointer Saturday after Kansas had whittled its deficit to one. Typical of an underdog, Farokhmanesh concedes that when he was in high school, he wasn't even sure he'd play Division I basketball.

"To go from that to, we're in the Sweet Sixteen, we just beat the No. 1 team in the country," Farokhmanesh said. "I mean, if someone would have told me that back then I would have laughed at them probably. But I think it shows that hard work really does pay off."

Another example that attitude and discipline makes the difference.

Obstacles and Opportunities

Recently a few of our 8th graders played in a tournament in Fishers, coached by our junior varsity coach Donald James. Their solid play reminded me of some important lessons.

"Beat 8" - When you are playing any game with officials, judges, or referees, you must practice with the intention of beating the five players on the court and (in high school) three officials. Officials are human. They call the game in favor of the team who works the hardest and plays the strongest. So regardless of whether you think the officials' calls are going your way or whether you are getting messed over, beat eight! If your team has this mindset, you will be much more successful.

"TNT" - "Takes No Talent" There are so many actions, movements, gestures, and contributions that you can make to your team and coaches that makes your team successful which "take no talent". Let's try to list a few: Sprinting back on defense every time, closing out with a hand up on a shooter while your bottom stays low, calling "mine" on a closeout, cheering your team on from the bench, staying in a defensive stance, pointing to the passer after hitting a shot, calling out screens, setting screens, blocking out, jump stopping, holding one's follow-thru, being coachable, clapping for a teammate, taking a charge, cutting hard, sliding one's feet to cut off the dribbler, high-fiving a teammate, talking about who has the shooter on the free-throw line, catching the basketball with two hands, pump faking, pass faking, coming to meet passes, and as Gordon Hayward did against Murray State, diving on the floor.

We should all view obstacles as opportunities. Enjoy the story below.

A Lesson on Overcoming Obstacles
In ancient times, a king had a huge stone placed in a roadway, then hid and watched to see if anyone would remove it. Some of the kingdom’s biggest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many of them loudly blamed the king for not keeping the roads clear, but none of them did anything about getting the big stone out of the way.

Then a peasant farmer came along, carrying a load of vegetables on his back. When he came to the boulder, he laid down his burden and began trying to move it to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded.

As he was picking up his vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold pieces and a note from the king indicating the gold was for the person who removed the stone from the roadway.

The peasant had learned what many others have learned since: Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve one’s condition.

I have been a part of teams that have won championships at every level; as highschoolers we won the state championship, as college athletes we won championships, and as a college coach we won championships. I have also been a part of teams that have been the worst in the conference - both as a coach and an athlete. Through these experiences I have learned some poignant lessons that will benefit you if, that is, you are in the business of winning championships.
In 7th grade I participated in my first science fair. I had been home schooled up until that point so I was very excited about the opportunity to display my creativity to someone other than my mother and my imaginary friends. I picked an extremely original idea for my first science fair; I chose to craft a volcano. I worked tirelessly for a week. I refused any assistance from my parents and even Bagbom, the most intelligent of my imaginary friends. I was quite proud of my creation and couldn't wait for Friday to show it to the world.
Friday came around; I put on my Smurf glasses, tucked my t-shirt into my jeans, and carried my volcano to the car. I was one of the first to arrive. I set up my station, unfolded my cardboard display and set my tiny, non-working model in the center. I stood with pride to survey the competition as the other students began to arrive and unfold their creations. (By creations I mean the fully functional monstrosities that their parents paid NASA to create out of rare metals!) I began to feel betrayed by Bagbom the imaginary friend. To make matters worse, just across the row from me was Timmy. He also had made a volcano. His, though, was the size of a small SUV, with lava pumping out the top, smoke he could turn on and off and audio bellowing sounds of desolation and destruction. It was the soundtrack of my pride going up in flames.
I quickly packed up my sad little mole-hill of a volcano, and ran home. It was 10 miles away. On the way I blamed the teacher for not explaining the assignment properly. I blamed my mom for not helping me more. I vowed never to play with Bagbom again. I even fogged up my Smurf glasses with my tears.
Since my recovery from this experience I have asked thousands of athletes to update me on their season. I ask how their team is performing. The vast majority of the time I hear them tell me how their coach isn't very good. How their team doesn't care enough. How no one is as committed as they are. How their big man won't rebound. How their point guard won't pass the ball. How their team doesn't defend.
I then ask what they do every day in practice to change the issue. I am answered with a blank look. Most athletes don't own their teammates' - like I refused to own my sorry little volcano.
What these athletes failed to realize - as did the younger version of myself - was that champions own each drill they participate in. Winners own the performance of their teammates. Special players will not allow a teammate to do something incorrect over and over again throughout a season. Leaders take ownership of everything.
I have a group of elite 15 year olds that I coach. They are the best players for their age in the area. We have had our first week of practice and I was amazed at how easily they allowed each other to be average. When I asked them if they knew their teammate was doing the drill incorrectly, they said yes. When I asked them why they didn't say something, they said that it wasn't their job.
I asked them then, 'Is it your job to win?'
All athletes seek to own the success of their teams. Most athletes will easily celebrate a pass they make that leads to a basket. Winners, on the other hand, will always seek to own the missed passes too. Special leaders seek to own the mistakes made every day in practice. They know that failure lies at their feet and that is why they are driven with manic energy to be constantly reminding, encouraging, correcting and inspiring their team every moment they are around them.

Manual ends Dogs' season in Sectional 12 bout.

The boys' basketball team lost Tuesday night 59-48. The Dogs shot a mere 32% from the field throughout the game. Thankfully Mycah Whetstone came off the bench and provided some sizzling play going 5-9 from the field for 16 points and grabbing nine boards. Kurtis Runyon led the Dogs in rebounding with 11. And Chase Dutra led the team in assists dishing out three. Coach Kendrick would like to thank the seniors Alan Paddock, Levi Roach, Jacob Eldridge, and Kurtis Runyon for their dedication to Brownsburg Basketball, the cheerleaders for their hard work, and to our loyal fans for your support.

Parents Sonia Roach, Debbie Weathers, Deidre Eldridge, and Ann Hathaway organized the breakfast Wednesday. Thank you parents for all of your help! Obviously it would not have happened without the generosity of Flapjacks. They served up 30 sensational platters of bacon, eggs, sausage, and pancakes to hungry basketball players and cheerleaders.

Saturday Chick-fil-A in Avon graciously provided lunch for 19 members of the basketball team following sectional practice at Indianapolis Arsenal Tech. Even in the midst of the lunch hour rush, Chick-fil-A served up a tray of chicken nuggets and several servings of delicious waffle fries to our hungry student-athletes. Thank you Chris Tincher (see photograph), Store Operator, for your blessings and your workers' terrific service.

The Brownsburg Bulldog Boys’ Basketball team concluded their regular season last night with a tough loss to the second ranked team in the state, the North Central Panthers, 81-51. After playing poised for the first 15 minutes of the game the Panthers’ pressure caused turnovers that prompted a 9-0 run to conclude the half and the Dogs went to the locker room down 43-26. The Dogs did not handle the pressure better in the second half as North Central continued to score off the Bulldogs’ turnovers. The Panthers scored 25 points off of the Bulldogs' mistakes for the game. Despite the errors Brownsburg played well in spurts. Tyler Whetstone scored seven points in the first quarter to get the Dogs rolling. Torrey Nibbs slashed for eight points in the second quarter. Kurtis Runyon scored 12 points in the third quarter. Jacob Eldridge, who was also honored for his academic performance, scored eight points in the game. Brownsburg finishes the regular season at 5-15. The Dogs look forward to Tuesday night's match-up in the first round of sectional 12 play versus Manual hosted at Indianapolis Tech High School beginning at 7:00 p.m.

The Bulldogs battle North Central tonight who is currently ranked #2 in the state. It has been two years since the Bulldogs have knocked off a top ten team. To have the opportunity to do it in the mecca of basketball in Indiana is something the Bulldogs are excited about. Regardless, the test prepares the Dogs for the sectional match-up next Tuesday against Manual. To win the sectional the Dogs must revenge a defeat to possibly three teams: Manual, Pike, and the winners of Avon, Ben Davis, Tech, and Decatur Central. Although the underdog in the sectional Brownsburg knows that they are playing their best basketball of the season. In addition, they believe anything can happen in just 32 minutes!

Last Friday night at Lafayette Jefferson, the Brownsburg Bulldogs produced their highest offensive output of the season, scoring 73 points, shooting 60% and scoring 44 points in the second half. The Dogs got down by as many as 13 points but only trailed 29-32 at the half, erupting in the third quarter for 24 points behind the attack of Jacob Eldridge and Torrey Nibbs. The Duo combined for 14 points in the quarter. After seven lead changes and four ties, the Dogs extended their lead to seven, but couldn’t hold on. The offense wasn’t enough to overcome the 28 free-throws made by the Lafayette Jefferson Bronchos, or the ten turnovers committed by the Dogs in the fourth quarter. Jacob Eldridge led the Bulldogs with a career high 23 points, five rebounds, two steals, and two assists. Torrey Nibbs lead the team in rebounding with seven boards to go along with 18 points and a steal. Alan Paddock also had a career high 10 points on five for six shooting, and Chase Dutra was perfect in shooting going two for two from the field, one for one from the three point line, and two for two from the charity stripe. Bulldogs Persevere and win at Harrison 58-53

West Lafayette, Indiana. The Brownsburg Boys’ Basketball team defeated Hoosier Crossroads Conference foe Harrison High School last night 58-53. The Raiders threw the first punch scoring the first three baskets, but the Bulldogs battled back and attacked the basket and shot 6-6 from the free-throw line, while Scott Hathaway hit two pull up jumpers to help the Dogs stay within six 10-16. The Dogs kicked in the offense in the second period. Six different players scored. Chase Dutra drove home a break away lay-up; Kurtis Runyon scored a put-back; Tyler Whetstone hit a jumper; Torrey Nibbs knocked down a step-back three; Kirk Weathers nailed a three ball and a 17 footer, and Scott Hathaway finished a high-low play from T. Whet. to give the Dogs a 26-25 lead at the half. The Raiders started hot again in the third quarter hitting three straight threes, but once again the Bulldogs responded. Chase Dutra’s hustle plays kept the ball out of the post and lead to fast break points as he anchored the Dog’s zone defense. Torrey Nibbs diced up the Raiders defense for five third quarter points, and Kurtis Runyon scored six as he connected on a three at the buzzer. Every possession was pivotal in this game, especially in the fourth quarter. Taylor Shields gathered a loose ball deflected by Scott Hathaway and drove to the hole for a duce that gave the Dogs a three point lead. Kurtis Runyon scored in the painted on a patented post move from a Dutra assist. Tyler Whetstone rained in a three pointer over a 6’7 defender from another Chase Dutra drive and kick. Then Dutra slashed to the basket for a score on the interior of the Raider’s defense. And Torrey Nibbs went 9-9 from the free throw line including four straight to conclude the game and seal the deal for the Dogs. The win is the first HCC victory for Brownsburg and puts them at 5-12 on the season. Statistical leaders were Torrey Nibbs with 16 points, six rebounds. Kurtis Runyon had 12 points and five rebounds. Tyler Whetstone scored nine points. Scott Hathaway scored eight points, three rebounds, and grabbed four steals. Chase Dutra went three for three from the field, dished out three assists, and nabbed three steals. Kirk Weathers scored five points, and Taylor Shields scored 2 in the team victory. The Dogs face Westfield tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon. Come out and celebrate our Senior Day!

The Boys JV basketball team improved their record Thursday night to
11-4 by defeating Harrison 48-27. The Dogs pulled away in the 4th
quarter outscoring the Raiders 19-5. Darayl Jordan led the way with 11
points and 8 rebounds, while Dylan Whetstone and Jordan Reagan chipped
in 8 points apiece. The Dogs are back in action this Saturday at home
at 1:00pm against Westfield.

Bulldogs win two over Athenians

Following a terrific comeback victory by the JV team, the Varsity Bulldog Basketball Team earned a W over Crawfordsville Saturday night 51-42. Rebounding, free-throws, and key baskets propelled the Bulldogs past the home team. The Athenians opened the game on fire and went 5-5 from the field in the first quarter. Chase Dutra and Tyler Whetstone both knocked down a duce, and Torrey Nibbs stroked a three ball to keep the score 7-11. The Bulldogs went on their own run in the second quarter behind nine points from Nibbs. The Bulldogs picked up the defense, and Kurtis Runyon scored a last second basket from a Scott Hathaway assist for a 16-6 run in the second quarter. The Dogs hung on to the lead in the third quarter and then answered big plays by the Athenians in the fourth. Kirk Weathers drained a three ball from the left corner on an assist from Jacob Eldridge to extend the lead to five. Crawfordsville answered with a bucket. Scott Hathaway drove to the paint and knocked down a pull up. The Athenians answered with a bucket. Tyler Whetstone drained back to back threes both on assists from Scott Hathaway to keep the lead at five, while Chase Dutra played great defense keeping Crawfordsville’s best player scoreless while guarding him. With a five point lead, Jacob Eldridge calmly went four for four from the free throw line, and Torrey Nibbs drained two more from the charity stripe to seal the victory. The Dogs out rebounded the Athenians 27-16, shot 46% from the arc, and beat a 10-4 team on the road. Torrey Nibbs lead the Dogs with 18 points and played a solid all-around game. Tyler Whetstone had a career high 15 points going three of six from the arc. Chase Dutra and Kurtis Runyon both wiped the boards with six rebounds each. Scott Hathaway grabbed two steals to go along with three assists and four points. Chase Dutra also garnered three assists, a steal, and scored five points. Kurtis Runyon had two points; Jacob Eldridge scored four points, and Kirk Weathers took a charge to compliment his three ball. The Dogs are 4-12 on the season and travel to Harrison this Thursday night for an important HCC match-up. Don’t forget that Senior Day is this Saturday against Westfield. The Junior Varsity game will start at 1:00 p.m.
The Junior Varsity boys basketball team improved their record to 10-4 with a 54-49 victory over Crawfordsville Saturday night. The Dogs outscored Crawfordsville 25-9 in the 4th quarter to cap an exciting comeback victory. The Dogs were led by Taylor Shields' 21 points, Jordan Reagan's 9 points and 7 rebounds, and Evan Finley's 8 points and 6 rebounds. Mycah and Dylan Whetstone also played a key role in the win with 6 points and 3 assists apiece.

Bulldogs win three quarters, but it isn't enough against the Millers

Although the Bulldogs won the last three quarters of the game Friday night in Noblesville, Indiana, the effort wasn't enough to claim victory. The Millers jumped out to a 15 point lead in the first quarter. Kurtis Runyon got the Dogs rolling with seven second quarter points. The Dogs came out strong in the third quarter behind Scott Hathaway's five points, six deflections, and charge. The Dogs would get no closer than eight points despite a terrific night from senior Kurtis Runyon who poured in 18 points on 8 of 11 shooting. Runyon also lead all rebounders with nine. Torrey Nibbs added eight points, Scott Hathaway dropped in a career high seven points, Tyler Whetstone added four points, Mycah Whetstone three, and Alan Paddock one. The Dogs play their last home game this Friday vs. Westfield. Come out and celebrate senior night!

$1171.11 raised to fight Cancer!

Varsity Assistant Coach Brent Walter spearheaded the Coaches vs. Cancer night which earned $1171.11. Faculty and staff at Brownsburg High School gave over $300 dollars to the cause and Brownsburg Junior Basketball League donated $250.00. After donations were collect by our freshman basketball team, the total surmounted $1100.00. Thank you Bulldog Fans for your phenomenal generosity.

Tonight, Coach Brian Satterfield and the HSE Royals will join Coach Kendrick and the Brownsburg Bulldogs in Coaches for Cancer, a nation-wide fight against cancer. Our goal is to raise $500, and we are on our way to accomplishing this. The event has already raised over $100 as teachers at BHS have contributed to the cause. Freshman basketball players will be present at the game to collect donations from fans. A special thanks goes out to Varsity Assistant Brent Walter who organized this event. Please come out and support the Bulldogs, and most importantly, our fight against cancer.

Dogs make big plays to secure victory!

The Dogs started the game hot and ended the game with big plays to beat Plainfield 54-52 and earn 3rd place in the Hendricks County Tournament. Kurtis Runyon, Alan Paddock, Jacob Eldridge and Torrey Nibbs connected on the first four shots of the game for the Dogs. The hot shooting help the Dogs build a 17-11 lead. Plainfield attacked the basket in the second quarter and drew fouls which allowed them to score from the foul line and take a four point lead at half. The Bulldogs battled back and cut the deficit to just two to begin the fourth quarter. The Dogs picked up their defense holding the Quakers to only two field goals in the final stanza. But big offensive plays by Jacob Eldridge and Tyler Whetstone who combined scored all 13 points in the fourth quarter carried the Dogs on the scoreboard. Whetstone knocked down a three from the corner, and then Eldridge hit a pull-up jumper on the right wing. Eldridge then connected on a deep three ball before making a hard drive to the basket, drawing the foul and converting the three point play the old fashioned way, tying the game for the Dogs with 44 seconds left. The Dogs forced a long shot, rebounded it, and Eldridge headed toward the goal with 16 seconds left when he found Tyler Whetstone open for a 15 foot baseline jumper. The game winner went in with 6.6 seconds left and the Bulldog defense swarmed the Quakers who didn't get off a shot before the buzzer. The win came with tremendous team play proven by 16 assists on the night. Congrats to the Bulldogs for two hard fought contests in the Hendricks County Tournament. The Bulldogs will face Hamilton Southeastern at home on Friday at 6:00. Come out and fight Cancer with us as it will be Coaches for Cancer night at the Fieldhouse.

Bulldogs Give their Best against Danville

The Bulldogs fought tenaciously against the undefeated #3 ranked team and Hendricks County Champions the Danville Warriors on Friday night. The Dogs played tough basketball and went to the locker room only down six at half, withstanding a 11-0 run by the Warriors. Behind hot shooting the Warriors went on another 11-2 run to start the second half. The Bulldogs held Purdue-bound Travis Carroll to ten points on the night, but it was Carroll's teammates that picked up the slack and knocked down big shots to beat the Bulldogs. Torrey Nibbs lead the Bulldogs with 16 points and five rebounds; Jacob Eldridge scored 11 points and nabbed three steals; Tyler Whetstone was perfect for the field scoring seven points; Kurtis Runyon dropped in five points; and Evan Finley and Alan Paddock both added a bucket in the contest.

The Junior Varsity Boys basketball team won their improved their record to 4-3 on Friday night with a 43-40 victory over Avon. The Dogs were led by Dylan Whetstones 9 points and Evan Finley’s 8 points and 5 rebounds. Darayl Jordan also played a solid game leading the Dogs with 7 rebounds while chipping in 4 points.

The JV boys basketball team won their 5th straight game Saturday night at home against Ben Davis 47-42. After falling behind 20-6 in the 1st quarter the Dogs fought back behind 14 points from Taylor Shields, 10 points from Chase Dutra, and 8 points and 3 charges taken from Kirk Weathers.

The Varsity Boys Basketball Team played poorly Friday night and lost to Avon 57-34. The Dogs gave up 23 points in transition and only shot 25% from the field. Levi Roach came off the bench and led the Dogs with 11 points, while Jacob Eldridge grabbed seven rebounds.

Saturday night the Dogs battled Ben Davis, but again come up short losing 41-54. A third quarter run by the Giants halted the Bulldogs' attack. Levi Roach scored double figures again for the Dogs with 10 points, and Jacob Eldridge led the Bulldogs with 12 points. Tyler Whetstone grabbed a career high 7 rebounds on the night.

On Saturday night the JV boys' basketball team resumed their winning ways defeating Pike 39-34 to improve their record to 3-3. Taylor Shields had his best all-around game of the season while tossing in 20 points. Chase Dutra added 7 points while Darayl Jordan and Scott Hathaway contributed 5 points each. The JV boys are back in action this Friday and Saturday against Avon and Ben Davis.

The varsity boys' basketball team defended their home court with pride last Saturday night against #8 Pike. The Bulldogs held the Red Devils to their lowest point total of the year but came up short 45-54. In front of Coach John Calipari, University of Kentucky, and Coach Tom Crean, Indiana University, Brownsburg bounced back from a 0-7 deficit to take a 19-18 lead. The Devils responded and the Dogs couldn't catch up due to 17 points from the foul line for Pike. Torrey Nibbs lead the Dogs with 17 points and Jacob Eldridge added 11 in the loss. The Bulldogs travel to Avon this Friday and host Ben Davis on Saturday night.

Fisher Tigers Top Dogs

The Boys Basketball J.V. team lost on Friday night to Fishers High School 40-42. The Bulldogs led most of the game but didn’t play well enough to finish the Tigers off. Darayl Jordan led the Dogs with 9 points, Dylan Whetstone dropped in 8 points, and Scott Hathaway had 7.

The Varsity Boys’ Basketball team played one terrific half of basketball vs. Fishers on Friday. The Dogs held the Tigers to just 38% shooting in the first half and only four points in the second quarter. But in the third quarter the Tigers made a run and the Dogs couldn’t recover. Poor offense, missed shots, and lacking defense by the Bulldogs who allowed Fishers to score 38 points in the second half proved costly to the home team. Final score 45-59. Jacob Eldridge led all scorers and rebounders with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Kurtis Runyon scored 7 points and grabbed five rebounds in the loss.

Senior Jacob Eldridge speaks on 'Achievement' at Brown Elementary

With only a terrific message for students, Jacob Eldridge articulately addressed 450 elementary students and numerous faculty members at Brown Elementary during their 'Achievement Celebration Day'! For almost five minutes senior basketball player Jacob Eldridge communicated the necessity for all to work hard, be persistent, and 'do right' in order to achieve in the classroom, in sports, and in life. Dressed as Scottie Reynolds (the celebrated guard from Villanova) for Halloween during senior dress up day, Jacob put down his books during his 7th period study hall to address the eager students at Brown Elementary. Jacob's articulate delivery was without note cards or notes. As a junior Jacob averaged over five points a game for the Bulldogs. However, this year he is expecting to carry more of the load on the hardwood.
